A frequent question that I often hear this year is “Biltong what is it?” and it drives me nuts that some people hadn’t discovered this tasty treat yet. I, for one think that eating in a routine is boring and tasteless, so I always strive to find new snacks and tastes to sate my curiosity, and luckily, I found biltong. Biltong is a South African snack that is sliced, dried, and cured beef that’s almost like beef jerky, and it has many great benefits such as:
Flavorful
Biltong is rich in flavor because of the many spices added during the prepping and cooking process, like coriander, vinegar, salt, pepper, paprika, and cloves. But don’t let tradition stop you from experimenting because if we do, there won’t be any new recipe discoveries and food surprises happening! You can mix them with avocado, mango, prepare them in a salad, or eat them as a treat. Anything goes with biltong!
Nutrient-Rich
Did you know that biltong is rich in nutrients? Yes, like any other beef-based meat, they are rich in protein and a great deal of many vitamins like vitamin B6 and B12 that are healthy for our bodies because of their blood and cell replication qualities. We can always benefit from eating nutritious foods, and adding protein into our diet can help us preserve muscle mass and replace damaged cells.
Quick Energy Supply
Biltong makes for a good quick energy supply and a great post-workout snack if you don’t have the time to prepare a meal, but you want to fill up your stomach with something rich in protein and nutrients. Biltong contains kilojoules which will be used as energy for our bodies, and it is much healthier than snacking on some chocolate chip cookies or potato chips!
Stored Well
Since biltong is dried, naturally, it has good storage value, and you won’t have to worry if they go bad quickly. You can store them in a plastic bag inside your gym bag without worrying that you have to eat them soon; otherwise, it will go bad. Biltong is perfect for a hiking trip or when you’re on the road, and you need something easy to handle and quick to snack on.
Low in Fat
We already know that biltong is rich in protein, and since it is lean meat, you won’t need to worry that you’ll gain significant weight by snacking one or two biltongs. The good news is that biltong is low in fat and gluten-free, making it the perfect choice for a well-balanced snack that won’t add to your weight gain.
There are so many great things about biltong that we could not fit in this article, but don’t let us persuade you. Try it out for yourself, and see what we mean. Remember to pack them in some nice plastic bags or Tupperware, so they are presentable and easy to snack on, even during trips or when you’re in the gym.…
